The tradition of Ghost stories and Christmas did not begin with Charles Dickens, although he did reawaken the tradtion, as he did reawaken the tradition of Christmas itself. Before the Christian holiday of Christmas, Pagan's in Europe would celebrate Yule, the celecbration of winter, death, and rebirth. The time of the Winter Soltice was when the darkness would hold many fears.
